Internal MedicineInternal medicine also known as general medicine is the medical specialty dealing with prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. Internal medicine physician are specialist who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to diagnose, treat, and care for adults across the spectrum of great health to complex illnesses. Internal medicine physicians are often referred to as internists, or doctors of internal medicine. Internal medicine physician are also sometimes referred to as the doctor’s doctor. They are called this because they are often called upon to act as consultants to other physicians to help solve puzzling diagnostic problem.

There a many subspecialties in the category of internal medicine some include:

Cardiology. Dealing with disorders of the heart and blood vessels.

Gastroenterology. Dealing with the field of digestive diseases.

Infectious Disease. Concerned with diseases caused by a biological agent such as a virus, bacteria, or parasite.

Nephrology. Dealing with the function and diseases of the kidney.

Pulmonology. Dealing with diseases of the lungs and respiratory tract.

Sleep Medicine. Devoted to the diagnosis and therapy of sleep disturbances and disorders.

Sports Medicine Also known as sports and exercise medicine, deals with physical fitness and the treatment and prevention of injuries related to sports and exercise.

Everyone who practices any of these subcategories of medicine is referred to as internists. Internal medicine physicians care only for adults. They have studied and specialized in diseases that mainly happen only in adults. Internal medicine physicians have a great knowledge of adult diseases.
