It is often thought that if you have chest pain on the left side of your chest that you are having or are about to have a heart attack. This is the side of your chest where your heart is located and any pain in this area should be a cause of concern as it can be caused by a severe medical condition. While pain on the left side of your chest can be a sign of a heart attack that is not always the case. You may be experiencing a symptom of a condition that is less life threatening. The pain that you are feeling could be something as simple as heartburn. Gas, heartburn, or acid build up can cause mild to severe pain in the left side of your chest. While the cause of chest pain can be something harmless like gas it could also be something more serious like cardiac ischemia. Cardiac ischemia is a condition caused by the heart not getting adequate amounts of blood over time. This condition can eventually lead to heart attack or heart failure. There is a wide spectrum of conditions that have potential for diagnosis when the key symptom is chest pain. Any severe chest pain should be taken seriously. If pain doesn’t subside in a fair amount of time your doctor should be contacted immediately. It is always better to be safe than to attempt to self diagnose. Always pay close attention to your body and be aware of any uncommon signs it is sending you.
